Antivirus update from the district

On Wednesday, March 11, 2009, Technology Services will begin the automated process of removing Symantec Antivirus and installing Trend Micro Office Scan Antivirus on the Pine Shadows teacher laptops.

The process requires little user interaction and it will launch when the user boots their laptops. We ask that on Wednesday, March 11, that you reboot your laptop during your conference period and then before your lunch break.

The first time the laptop is booted, it will show a message advertising that it is installing Trend Micro Office Scan and the advertisement will stay up for about 15 to 45 seconds. When the user logs in for the first time it will display a Symantec removal popup. The user will not have enough time to read it nor should they have the ability to choose anything. When the desktop completely loads it will show Symantec Shield symbol with and explanation point and Trend icon will also displayed.

On the laptops second boot (reboot) the laptop will again show the installing Trend Micro Office Scan advertisement while the laptop is booting and it may be advertised for as little as 45 seconds to as much as a few minutes. After the second reboot, the installation process should be complete.

We are going to install Trend on the teacher laptops only. We will initiate the install starting on Wednesday, March 11, 2009.

Please do not interrupt the install process by turning off or restarting the machine during the advertisement of the antivirus install. This could cause major loss of data to your laptop and it could cause the laptop to have to be reimaged.
